It's very likely that your electronic steering column unit (also referred to as an ESCL) has developed a fault.
In the early 2000s Mercedes introduced the ESCL as a security device. It’s designed to lock the steering column as soon as the key is withdrawn from the ignition barrel.
The new ESCL modules installed on C-class and E-class Mercedes models are particularly prone to faults.

Of course you could take your car to a main dealership, but then you’d have to wait days for them to order a “workshop key” from the factory (also known as a “green key”) which contains programming software unique to your vehicle. And then you’d have to wait for the technicians there to find the time to make use of that key.
