STEERING COLUMN LOCK PROBLEMS

Volkswagen Passat models manufactured between 2005 and 2011 are prone to electronic steering column lock failures, meaning the car can no longer be driven until that failure is dealt with. Previously the steering column lock had been mechanical, but for these particular models it was replaced by the ESCL – the Electric Steering Column Lock.
There are often warning signs before the ESCL fails completely, including the need to try starting your Passat several times in a row, or the appearance of a dashboard warning light such as this one:

QUESTIONS
When the key is inserted into the ignition barrel, the factory-installed immobiliser system looks for the code in the transponder chip contained within the key. If the code is correct the ESCL automatically disengages, and re-engages once more when the key is removed.
