Ignition Barrel Problems—Diagnosed and Fixed On-Site

We repair and replace mechanical ignition barrels on all makes and models. If your vehicle has a traditional key ignition and the barrel is causing the problem, we come to you — home, workplace, car park, or roadside.

🔑

Key Inserts But Won't Turn

The barrel pins are worn or the mechanism has seized. Assessed on arrival — repaired or replaced on the same visit.

🛠️

Stiff or Jammed Ignition

A barrel that fights you on every start is in its final stage before full seizure. We catch it before it strands you completely.

🔧

Break-In or Forced Entry Damage

Theft attempts destroy the internal mechanism. We carry replacement barrels for the most common makes and carry out the work on-site.

🔓

Key Stuck or Broken Inside the Barrel

Do not force it. We extract the fragment, assess the internal damage, and repair or replace the barrel in one visit.

🚗

Barrel Loose or Rattling in the Column

A shifting barrel will eventually fail to complete the start cycle. In most cases a replacement is the right answer — and the permanent one.

⚡

Intermittent Starting

Works some mornings, not others. This is typically a late-stage worn-pin fault — the window before a full barrel seizure. Call us now.

Repair or Replace? We Assess On-Site and Tell You Which

Many ignition barrels do not need replacing. Our technician inspects the barrel on arrival and gives you a clear recommendation before any work begins. You are never pushed toward the more expensive option.

Your Situation What It Usually Means Our Recommendation
Barrel stiff but mechanism still intact Worn pins, mechanism recoverable ✓ Repair — faster, lower cost
One or two worn pins, barrel otherwise sound Targeted fault, rest of barrel good ✓ Repair — restores reliable function
Barrel drilled, forced, or mechanically destroyed Internal mechanism cannot be restored Replace — only viable option
Wear too advanced for a reliable repair Repair would fail again quickly Replace — avoids repeat failure
Key broken inside the barrel Depends on the internal damage level Full on-site assessment required

Repair is always considered first. If it will not hold reliably, we explain exactly why before recommending replacement

Not sure if it's the barrel? Call before you commit to anything. We diagnose the most likely cause on the phone — and tell you straight if this is the right service for your problem.

The Mechanical Lock Behind Every Start

Understanding your ignition barrel — and why it is not the same fault as the ignition switch — prevents unnecessary work and wasted cost.

Your steering column houses a lock cylinder — the ignition barrel — containing precision spring-loaded pins called tumblers. When your key is inserted, its cuts align those pins. Correct alignment allows the barrel to rotate through four positions: off, accessory, on, and start.

When the barrel reaches the start position, it activates the ignition switch — a separate electrical component behind it. These are two different parts with two different failure modes. Knowing which has failed determines the correct repair and avoids paying for the wrong one.

Common causes of barrel failure: normal wear after thousands of start cycles; heavy keychains placing a constant downward load on the pins during driving; forced entry or drilling; broken key fragments lodged inside; moisture or debris entering over time.

Ignition Barrel — Mechanical Fault

Key Will Not Turn
The lock cylinder is seized, stiff, or physically damaged. The mechanical pins are the fault. This is a barrel repair or replacement.
Ignition Switch — Electrical Fault

Key Turns But Nothing Happens
The barrel rotates normally. Power to vehicle systems is absent or intermittent. The electrical switch contacts are the fault — not the barrel itself.

Why Car Keys Solutions

Our technicians attend with the tools, parts, and experience to complete most ignition barrel repairs on the first visit — no garage, no recovery vehicle, no second appointment.

RAC Accredited

Our standards are assessed externally every year — not claimed on a website. RAC accreditation means our technicians, processes, and service quality are verified against independent criteria.

Every Technician is Criminal Record Checked

Every technician is DBS checked before attending any job. You can confirm this when you book.

You Pay Exactly What We Quote

The price is fixed and confirmed before work begins. If we find something unexpected mid-job, we stop, explain, and get your approval.

Most Arrivals Under 30 Minutes

We cover homes, workplaces, car parks, and roadsides. Most of the time we reach you faster than a recovery vehicle — and we carry the parts to fix the problem on the spot.

Proof of Ownership Required on Every Job

Your driving licence and V5C — or proof of keepership — are required before any ignition barrel work. This is a legal safeguard applied without exception. It protects you as much as it protects us.
