HOW PEUGEOT KEYS WORK
From 1995 onwards, all Peugeot vehicles have been equipped with a factory-installed immobiliser system that depends on synchronisation with a small glass chip concealed within the key casing. The chip itself is programmed with a complex code that can’t be overwritten, and since it doesn’t require any kind of power source there’s very little chance of it going wrong in any way.
Programming the key normally involves a four-digit numeric security code.
Every time the key is inserted into the ignition barrel, the Peugeot’s immobiliser system checks for the code embedded in the chip, and if it’s correct the car will start. If it’s not, then the fuel supply to the engine will be cut off.
Programming new Peugeot keys requires the use of sophisticated diagnostic and programming tools usually used by dealerships, which can involve a long and expensive wait while the new key is delivered, cut and programmed.
